If you can't answer this question, you are playing on autopilot and you should immediately work towards paying more attention. For example, ask yourself these two questions whenever you get hit by an attack "What attack did I get hit with?" and "What motivated my opponent to use that attack?" It's one thing to autopilot for an entire match, it's another thing to actively know the what, why, and when of every interaction and decision that occurs in the game. When playing against human opponents, make sure you are thinking about how you play. Basic mind-games, reads, and pattern recognition is arguably more important than mastering tech skill, and CPUs will do nothing towards improving it. If you want to improve your fundamentals, there is no substitution for a human opponent. While the latter is also true for low level CPUs, they don't really do much attacking and are better suited to just be punching bags. Training against higher level CPUs will make you develop bad habits, as they do things that players will never do and refuse to do things that nearly every low/mid level player does. Speaking from experience, you can grind thousands of hours practicing techskill with 20xx and still be terrible at this game.Īnyway, what character do you play? what do you wish to learn? maybe I can answer a few questions if you need to know anything specific In order to get good at Melee you absolutely have to play human opponents.
If you need to know how to do anything specific just go to the smashboards thread: Įxtra advice: don't mistake tech skill practice for actual Melee practice. If you're a numbers and data person you can turn on collision bubbles and frame counters and experiment for yourself. Then when you got it down pat you have to try using it against a human opponent, you will see that implementing it into your actual play is harder than just mindlessly spamming it in the lab. Any tech you try to learn you will have to try over and over again until you can do it perfectly and then you should probably do it a hundred times over. You can also have the computer hold an infinite shield (in-game press d-pad down to turn on infinite shields followed by L + d pad left which will make the CPU on slot 2 hold shield) to practice your cancel timings on shield and later your shield pressure.Īs far as tech skill goes, it's 100% about practice, practice and more fucking practice. Then you can practice your combos on a lvl 1 or 2 CPU -very important: training against higher lvl computers will give you terrible, terrible habits-, just make sure the CPU is on player slot 2 (slot 2 is programmed to tech and DI randomly, which is the closest you'll get to a human opponent). Your character will flash red when you fail to l-cancel and white when you do it successfully. If you're a completely new player I would suggest going into the debug menu and turning on "Flash on L-cancel", it'll help you nail what is probably the most important advanced technique in the game (l-canceling, obviously). Train what? there are many aspects of your game that you can improve upon using the 20xx hack pack.
